Unlikely Friends?

Yesterday I saw this video on Facebook about the friendship of an elephant and a dog who live at The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee. According to the story, the retired elephants enter the sanctuary one by one, but they find a partner and live out their lives two by two. That statement alone made my heart flutter a bit. It reminds me of the Noah story and the saying, “You cannot get into heaven without taking someone with you.”

I shared the video on my wall, and many people watched it and made comments. I decided to find out the source of the video, only to find that it was a video from CBS news, January 2009… and it has gone viral. So many, like me, were moved to share it with their friends.

I imagine that the story of “unlikely friends” touches a spot in all of our hearts. I imagine it touches that place of longing for unconditional love and acceptance. Steve Hartman, the reporter, said it all:

They harbor no fears, no secrets, no prejudices. Just two living creatures who somehow managed to look past their immense differences.
