Power Struggles

This photo reminds me of the legal system. Parties spend a lot of time and energy making their case – building their story of how they are better or more deserving or more right than the other. They pay an attorney to argue their case to a judge, then the judge gets to decide their future. I think the guy on the right has the best chance of winning here. What do you think?

This sounds like a silly question, but that’s my experience with the legal system. Whoever puts on the best display has the best chance of winning. I don’t like it, but I accept that it is the reality.

Mediation offers a way to focus your energy in the direction of solutions. It is where you get to tell your story and create your own future. You get to choose the outcome. And with this kind of investment of time and energy, the solutions are more sustainable in the long run. In other words, you are less likely to be dragged back to court over and over.

There is a saying in the recovery community. Would you rather be right or would you rather be free?
